What Are Foot Fractures?
Did you know that each of your feet contains 26 bones? A fracture in any one of these bones can lead to pain, mobility challenges, and a decline in your overall quality of life. Foot fractures can occur due to any number of reasons, but the most common include injuries (during sports or other activities) or footwear choices. Minor foot fractures may heal on their own, but more severe cases (such as when the fracture goes all the way through the bone) may require surgery or other interventions to set properly. If you suspect you may have a foot fracture, we urge you to reach out to Agape Foot Care as soon as possible so our team can examine the injury and develop a strategy to address it. Schedule a consultation with our podiatrists in Garland, Kaufman, or Waxahachie, TX to start your foot fracture treatment.
How Do You Treat Foot Fractures?
Before creating a treatment plan, our team will perform an extensive evaluation of the foot and talk with you to learn more about how your injury may have occurred. Treatment for minor foot fractures typically involves rest, application of ice or cold compresses, and medication to help manage any discomfort. If the break occurred in one of your toes, we'll apply a splint to keep it still while the bone naturally heals. Extreme foot fractures may require pins or rods to hold the bone in place, which will have to be done with surgery. During your consultation, we'll let you know what you can expect during the recovery process and strategies you can use at home to keep yourself comfortable.
What Are the Symptoms of A Foot Fracture?
Foot pain can often be traced to a number of causes, which is why a thorough exam is usually needed to diagnose foot fractures. We recommend scheduling a consultation at Agape Foot Care if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:
- Throbbing pain that comes and goes
- Numbness
- Swelling
- Sensitivity
- Difficulty walking, running, or otherwise staying mobile
- Redness or bruising
If you notice that your symptoms are getting worse or if your foot looks misshapen, you may have a severe fracture and should seek care as soon as possible.
